If you're curious as to what Coen slaps on Mao in this page, it's an ofuda. An ofuda, in traditional Japanese culture, is a simple talisman issued by Shinto shrines - they are said to bring good luck or protection to the bearer. Ofuda are usually made by inscribing the name of kami (god), the name of the shrine, or a representative of kami on wood, cloth, metal, or a strip of paper.
The purpose of each ofuda differs depending on what is written on it and they are used in different places accordingly. In Refraction, an ofuda is a small piece of paper that has holy or magical spells written on it. It comes in handy as a weapon against those with evil intentions... or pests you just can’t seem to get rid of, lol. This specific ofuda contains a freezing spell that prevents movement until the owner (Coen) removes it.
Darisha: zOMG! Refraction made it in to the Top 100 at topwebcomics.com. I know it's only the first of the month, but it doesn't change the fact that we got there, lol. Keep Refraction in the Top 100 by voting for us HERE.
So... theres actually something to the animal features?
I thought they were just for displaying emotions because you don't seen them for non action/extreme emotion shots.
@Em Kultra: Yeah, there is something to the animal features. We use them as a means of expressing certain emotions while the characters are in their "human" personas, but they do actually have animal forms as well (which will show up later).
